Our Story

Freedom Church Gastonia was founded in July of 1992 by Pastors Barry and Dianne Sullivan. Pastor Barry spent 18 years as a Pastor in the Methodist church. After 4 years pastoring Faith Methodist in Gastonia, NC he knew he and his family were called to Gastonia but were being moved to a different city and church. This led to breaking away from the denomination and the founding of Freedom Church Gastonia. The Sullivan’s were sent out by the denomination with their blessing and encouragement.

Pastor Barry and Dianne pastored Freedom Church faithfully for 24 years. During the 24 years thousands came through the doors and were ministered to. Lives changed, sick healed, families restored, and a place to encounter Jesus with an emphasis on worship and prayer had been established in Gastonia. A ministry team filled with good friends was built over the years and many are still serving the church today.

In 2005 Pastor Barry and Dianne’s son and daughter in law, BJ and Lisa Sullivan came on staff as Youth Pastors and Worship Leaders. Shortly after becoming the Associate Pastors. It’s been said that the goal of every pastor is to raise up someone to carry on his legacy and continue the ministry when he is gone, ‘finishing well”. Pastor Barry ‘finished well’ when he died in July of 2016 and BJ and Lisa stepped into the role of Lead Pastors.

FCG is currently thriving as Pastors BJ and Lisa are moving forward with the legacy that was established in 1992. Adding their vision of seeing the hope of Jesus in our homes, our city, and our world FCG is in the middle of an exciting time of growth. All are welcome to come and be a part of this family and our Home, Local, Global initiative.
